520 _aElder abuse and neglect are serious yet preventable problems in the United States. Approximately five million Americans are estimated to be victims of elder abuse and neglect each year, and just one in 24 cases are reported to authorities.[1] Victims often suffer from both elder abuse and neglect, so as I refer to elder abuse or neglect throughout this article, understand that it could very well mean both. The Harris County (Texas) Elder Fatality Review Team (EFFORT[2]) was formed in 2003 with a grant from the American Bar Association. EFFORT aims to identify and provide recommendations to prevent premature elderly deaths caused by elder abuse or neglect in our county. The team also examines and makes recommendations on preventable deaths of individuals with disabilities of all ages who could be victims of abuse and/or neglect. (From the document). Record #7667
