| 520 | _aViolence against women is a major human rights violation as well as a widespread public health concern. It has significant short-, medium- and long-term effects on the physical and mental health and well-being of women, children and families [1–16]. It is estimated that between 38% and 40% of murders of women are committed by intimate partners [17,18]. Violence against women also has serious social and economic consequences for countries and societies [19–21]. The previous global and regional estimates of violence against women, published in 2013 (#4158), established that intimate partner violence against women is a globally pervasive public health problem – experienced by almost a third of all women worldwide – requiring urgent action. This new report provides updated global and regional estimates of intimate partner violence and non-partner sexual violence, based on more and better quality data, and also presents country estimates1 of intimate partner violence against women.
