520 _aThis study was commissioned by the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (NCADA) as one of eight background/research papers to be distributed to delegates of a National Symposium on Alcohol Related Violence in December 1993. The brief for the study required that the research focus on male violence against women and children in domestic relationships. The methodology included: a thorough review of the literature on the role of alcohol in domestic violence, and more than 200 consultations with police and law enforcement agencies, the judiciary, community groups, peak bodies, government agencies, and welfare and crisis organisations, as well as victims and perpetrators of domestic violence. Almost 60 women victims of domestic violence were interviewed by means of a telephone questionnaire, with the remaning respondents participating in open-ended discussions around a set of key issues.
