This paper examines the common themes of studies which address issues relating to domestic violence and natural disasters: measuring domestic violence during and after a disaster; understanding what ‘causes’ the increase in violence after a disaster; vulnerability, impacts and recovery for individual victims; impacts, responses and recovery of organisations; and preparedness and planning for the increase in service needs of domestic violence victims. This paper also includes a discussion of what changes have occurred in the last decade in understanding and responding to increased domestic violence after natural disasters. This is a short paper in the ADFVC's Thematic Review series. Thse provide a short summary of key literary sources on a single topic, drawing out overarching themes.
