520 | _aThe Christchurch Women’s Refuge commissioned the Te Awatea Violence Research Centre, University of Canterbury, to assemble an evidence-base to inform the design, development and implementation of systematic models of specialist peer support respectively for men and women with ‘lived experience’ of family/whānau violence. Multiple and varied experiences and perspectives were sought during the preparation of the ‘Peer Support: Reframing the Journey from Lived Experience of Domestic Violence’ report, including contributions from individuals with ‘lived experience’ of family violence, individuals working within New Zealand’s Domestic Violence sector and individuals with expertise in delivering peer support projects. Some thirty individuals participated in focus groups and interviews and shared their experiences, views and opinions about peer support within the domestic violence context. Together with those consulted, a review of the New Zealand and international research, government policy, evaluation reports and the ‘grey’ literature was undertaken. The purpose of this report is to describe the lessons learnt from the various secondary data sources and people and to aid the creation of a systematic model of peer support and a peer support specialist training programme appropriate to a domestic violence setting in Canterbury, New Zealand.
