500 _aFamily Court custody and access research report 8
504 _aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 129-130).
520 _aThis report gives an overview of the culmination of seven research reports that investigated the way in which custody and access disputes are dealt with by the Family Court. The Policy and Research Division of the Department of Justice recommended the programme of research, which incorporates the views of more than 800 people, including parents, counselling co-ordinators, specialist report writers, lawyers, and judges. One of the aims of the programme was to ascertain the views of these key players concerning custody and access proceedings. This report identifies and discusses subjects that emerged as issues in the seven research reports. It draws tentative conclusions and makes some suggestions, but only in some areas relating to the issues that were raised in the reports. Only subjects that emerged as major issues are discussed. Therefore, the authors urge the reader of this report to refer to the individual research reports (see below) for a more detailed range of information. A possible Family Court model is presented which is built upon the suggestions and observations made in the report. The seven previous research projects are: "The Welfare of the Child: A Literature Review" (Hall, 1989); "A Survey of Parents who Have Obtained a Dissolution" (Lee, 1990); "The Views of Counsel for the Child, Specialist Report Writers and Department of Social Welfare Report Writers" (Harland, 1991); "Custody and Access Orders: Interviews With Parents About Their Court Experience" (Harland, 1991); "Counselling Co-ordinators' Group Discussion" (Hong, 1991); "A Survey of Family Court Judges" (Department of Justice, 1993); and "The Lawyers' Perspective" (Hall et al, 1993).
