520 _aThe study was undertaken using a multi-method, qualitative research approach. It was an exploratory study undertaken between November 1999 and June 2000 and in partnership with the network of Councils on the Ageing (COTA) across Australia. In-depth interviews, a national phone-in and focus groups were the key strategies used to reach older people. In total, 162 older people contributed to the study, comprising 140 women and 22 men. The research strategy also included interviews and focus groups with a range of professionals, and with a small sample of older people participating in community organisations. From Executive Summary
