520 _aThis literature review discusses in detail the characteristics and circumstances that inform our understanding of physical abuse and neglect by familial caregivers. It recognises that there are multidimensional explanations for abuse and neglect which incorporate complex interactions between individuals, families, communities and cultural systems. The review concludes that treatment and prevention services need to reflect those complex interactions. This review contributes significantly to research-based knowledge regarding development of care and protection policies and programmes. A discussion of the research method limitations and a strengths and weakness assessment of the research studies are reviewed within the report.
