520 _aThis book is dedicated to understanding the experiences and perspectives of children, with the aim of improving the wellbeing of children in New Zealand. Along with the editors, various other authors from differing occupational backgrounds contributed to the writing of this book. These include Margaret Carr, Nicola Atwool, Pauline Trapp, Mark Henaghan, Anne Kerslake Hendricks, and Andrea Jamison. The authors completed qualitative research, asking children about their experiences in relation to factors, such as being in welfare care, parental separation, and involvement with the legal system. The editors recommend that the "United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child" (1989) should be taken seriously, and this is a theme underpinning many of the chapters in this book. A discussion on ways to interview children effectively and respectfully is included, and the impact of exposure to risk and trauma on children is also examined. The Christchurch City Council is used as an example of how the government and communities can protect and enhance children's development. In conclusion, the book argues that to successfully advocate for the rights and wellbeing of children, future research and policies need to incorporate children's perspectives.
