520 _aThis report presents findings from a 2-year combined quantitative and qualitative study assessing the effectiveness of two programmes in protecting victims of family violence. The programmes assessed were the Hawkes Bay Domestic Violence Intervention and Education Project, and the Violence Intervention Programme, located in Wellington. The study investigated the experiences of women who are victims of family violence. Barriers to attending the programmes were identified, such as time constraints and concerns about sharing personal information in a group setting. This report emphasises the importance of an interagency collaborative approach to link women with resources so they may be protected from violence. Meeting the needs of women, cultural responsiveness, accessibility, suitable staff, and adequate funding were identified as components of an effective programme for protecting victims of family violence. Recommendations include strategies designed specifically for Maori victims, incorporating tikanga Māori principles and protocols.
