The booklet is aimed at those working to support women who have been abused by male partners, including case workers, teachers, health care workers and counsellors. In particular the book is intended to explain why encouraging separation from an abusive partner may not meet an abused woman's needs and may result in her unwillingness to seek help again. It provides a guide for making a phase appropriate response to abused women seeking help. The phases covered are: 1) seeking help for the partner and his behaviour, or skills to improve the relationship, 2) help to sustain herself so she can survive in the relationship, 3) help to plan for separation, and 4) help for the survival of herself and her children after separation. The guide also makes suggestions for preventive intervention for young women before they commit to a relationship; and for recovery, when women are trying to understand the experience and prepare for the future.
