520 _aThis paper comments on and accompanies the release of UNICEF's international report "Behind Closed Doors - Impact of Domestic Violence on Children" (2006). The question of whether New Zealand is doing enough for its children is examined. Discussed in the paper are estimates of how many children are exposed to domestic violence, children's needs in terms of protection, how New Zealand is progressing in relation to child-friendly policies, children's voices and child advocacy, and relatively recent government initiatives that potentially benefit children. The paper concludes that it has not been possible to accurately evaluate the extent to which the needs identified in the international report have been met in New Zealand. It further adds that, although there are a range of programmes and initiatives of potential use, children's needs are not being met comprehensively, and no integrated long-term plan is in place.
