520 _aThis book explores the political, cultural and social issues facing Tonga and Tongans living abroad in Australia, New Zealand the United States. One such issue is the normalisation of violence in Tongan society, both within society generally and in families and kin groups. Chapter three describes the prevalence of intimate partner violence, violence used in disciplining children and violence used in response to shaming actions by relatives. The author discusses the underreporting of family violence, the role of alcohol abuse in family violence and lack of an effective response from community leaders. Considering Tonga's issues generally, the author considers change can only come about through social reconstruction based on justice, good governance and spiritual leadership.
