The research was conducted by randomly reviewing 8,051 medical records at two emergency departments in Auckland, New Zealand. Records showed that 2,966 patients were injured at time of presentation. Two hundred and sixty-six injuries were assault-related. The women were more likely to be younger and of Māori or Pacific Island descent. They were also more likely to present on Friday, Saturday or Sunday nights between 6pm and 6am. Women who were assaulted were more likely to have a head injury than those of accidental injury. They were also more likely to be discharged without follow-up treatment, or to leave the hospital without completing treatment. | ||
