520 _aThis article gives a relatively brief overview of child abuse in New Zealand. The incidence of child abuse in New Zealand, the different types of abuse, and the impact of abuse are addressed. The authors also examine professional recognition of child abuse, which includes diagnosis and assessment of abuse and health professionals' responsibility once diagnosis is made. Common reasons for practitioner non-referral of cases of child abuse are also explored.
