520 _aThis paper proposes that urgent action is needed to reduce child poverty in New Zealand and to action evidence-based strategies to improve outcomes for children who are disadvantaged. In the case of child abuse, it was noted that services for children and families are poorly coordinated. The paper calls for the promotion of the development of child-centred policies that will help to eliminate the conditions that create poverty. A community-based Sure Start initiative is described that was introduced in England. The authors argue that a similarly based programme implemented here in New Zealand would go a long way towards achieving improved outcomes for young children.
