520 _aThis conference paper discusses domestic violence in New Zealand, and more specifically in Auckland City. It examines the issues that surround domestic violence as experienced by victims: the cost of court appearances, the prevalence of domestically related murders and child witnesses, and the fact that the number of protection orders has remained constant since the enacting of the Domestic Violence Act (1995). The author concludes by recommending that lawyers and Family Court coordinators take action to reduce the cost to women of obtaining protection orders, and promote more widely the existing women's and children's programmes.
