520 _aThis journal article reviews and analyses significant child protection policy and legislative changes made in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand in response to growing concern that children are adversely affected by exposure to intimate partner violence. The article provides a general analysis of how these policy and legislative changes have addressed the need for child protection relating to exposure to intimate partner violence. The authors argue that the definition of children exposed to intimate partner violence as maltreated under such policies can lead to the re-victimisation of abused women and their children, as well as overwhelming already overburdened child protection systems. The authors propose child protection guidelines aimed at more adequately ensuring child safety and well-being by offering support and protection to adult victims, while holding perpetrators accountable. The authors further argue that mandatory reporting in child protection regimes may further hinder victims of intimate partner violence and their children.
