This article argues that the Government should incorporate proactive strategies to improve outcomes in the wellbeing of children. There are four critical areas that public policy needs to focus on: central placement of children in public policy; development of a good start in life for all children; elimination of child poverty; and reduction of child abuse and neglect. The authors conclude that these areas are interconnected and that this needs to be recognised through policy coordination, governmental initiatives, and overall political commitment to improving conditions for children. The authors also note it is of paramount importance that children's health and happiness become fundamental guiding principles in the political process.
