To understand how child sexual abuse is covered in mdia, the researchers selected a representative sample of U.S. news, then coded the content in detail. The overwhelming majority of articles (236, or 91%) focused on one or more specific child sexual abuse incidents. The remaining 24 pieces reported on a general theme relating to child sexual abuse (such as the stranger danger misconception), but did not include details of a specific incident.
