Summary: This book follows a group of women as they move out of and away from abusive relationships. Seven social dimensions are looked at from a gender perspective: power, emotion, children, home, economic resources, informal and community support. Though the combination of domestic violence and poverty are particularly constraining for women trying to escape from abusive relationships, the author found that the women who participated in this research, through resilience and resourcefulness, eventually achieved independentlives. However, to achieve lasting social change, messages against domestic violence need strengthening and a policy of 'zero tolerance' adopted.
