This brief article discusses the results of a collaborative pilot initiative between Auckland's Takapuna Family Court and local New Zealand Children and Young Persons Service (NZCYPS) staff. The initiative is a response to the need for speedy investigation in custody and access proceedings of cases with alleged care and protection issues, such as sexual abuse or physical abuse, or an over anxious child. This initiative is seen, from both the Family Court and NZCYPS perspective, as providing the necessary understanding for a variety of informed decisions to be made. These range from either fast-tracking such cases in order to promptly address the care and protection concerns found to be present, or returning the case to the usual Family Court custody and access depositions process. The authors are unanimously in favour of further such collaborative initiatives in the future.
