Summary: This report builds on information gathered in a series of regional surveys on ending violence for women. The project was commissioned by the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), and conducted in 2002 in various nations around the world. The goal of this report is to highlight achievements in addressing gender-based violence and discuss what must be done to advance these. The report provides examples of good practices, as well as learnings from programmes that did not meet their goals. It notes that to achieve equality, and to overcome gender-based violence, women must be able to access their rights in civil, political, cultural, economic, and social spheres. It argues that the gap between rhetoric and practice must be bridged in ending discrimination, inequality and gender-based violence. One of most critical areas of concern is the need for collaboration and partnerships between governments, international agencies and civil society organisations. In moving forward, several imperative areas for action are discussed: data collection and research, training, prevention strategies, public awareness, women's economic and political empowerment, men's involvement and responsibility, community-based initiatives, leadership, resources, and partnerships. Legislation on violence against women by country, selected indicators on violence against women, and projects supported by the UNIFEM trust fund to eliminate violence against women are listed as appendices.
