Summary: This book critically discusses how family group conferences (FGCs) are organised in some parts of New Zealand, and aims to give Americans a 'feel' of how FGCs work. The information for the book was obtained from a combination of New Zealand reports and studies, and interview statements by experts and practitioners from within New Zealand. A content analysis was conducted on interview summaries prepared from a structured set of interviews. The following aspects surrounding FGCs are discussed: the advantages and pitfalls; the identification of issues to be considered for advance planning in the United States; how FGCs would fit into the culture and law of the United States; an examination of New Zealand policies and procedures; and the barriers faced in New Zealand in the initial stages of FGCs.
