At least three out of four crime incidents are not reported to the police. Without the NZCVS, we would not have a clear picture of which crimes affect New Zealanders and who is most at risk. Each year we ask up to 8,000 people from all over Aotearoa who are 15 years and older about crimes experienced over the previous 12 months. This might include crimes that are reported to the police but also those that are not. The NZCVS has now been running for five years and we have interviewed over 40,000 people. The information we gain from the NZCVS is used across the justice sector to inform policies and design interventions to support victims and create safer communities in Aotearoa. This booklet examines some of the groups of New Zealanders who are most at risk of victimisation, as well as the types of crime that people are most at risk of experiencing*. We hope these findings will spark conversations and encourage further research to achieve reductions in crime and victimisation. * Unless otherwise stated, the statistics in this booklet represent pooled findings from the first five years of the survey using responses collected from 2018–2022. The findings about young people, LGBT+ and disabled people remain true when controlling for other key demographic factors such as age and gender. (From the booklet).
