Intimate partner violence, referred to as ‘domestic and family violence’ (DFV) in this review, is “an overt or subtle expression of a power imbalance, resulting in one person living in fear of another and [it] usually involves an ongoing pattern of abuse characterised by coercive and controlling behaviours” (Toivonen & Backhouse, 2018, p. 5). Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples prefer the use of the term ‘family violence’ to describe the violence that can occur within or between families in their communities (Toivonen & Backhouse, 2018).
