Developed with funding from Ministry of Health N2 - These Guidelines were developed in response to requests from mainstream and Māori health organisations. They wanted information to enable them to plan and deliver sexual and reproductive health promotion services that resonate for Māori communities. These organisations thought they could do a better job of working with Māori communities but were not sure how to achieve that outcome. The aim of the Guidelines is to assist sexual and reproductive health promoters to build relationships with Māori communities in order to undertake effective, community-responsive health promotion as this is interpreted in its broadest sense. This could mean consulting with Māori, interpreting Māori health data, planning a health promotion website, or developing a pamphlet. Strong relationships enable health promoters to engage Māori communities and individuals in meaningful dialogue, which is the basis for effective sexual and reproductive health promotion with Māori. The guidelines are based on the Pōhiri model which is derived from Māori values and protocols, and describes the characteristics of successful sexual and reproductive health promotion with Māori.
