It is the fourth report in a series of eight publications resulting from a research programme on custody and access issues in the Family Courts, undertaken by the Policy and Research Division of the Department of Justice. In-depth interviews were conducted with 61 people who had obtained a final custody and/or access order. Information was gathered about the participants' experiences with court personnel, opinions about lawyers, counselling received, counselling co-ordinators, counsel for the child, mediation conferences, and specialist reports, the hearing itself, and the outcome of the court process. Reasons for any dissatisfaction were also obtained and suggestions for improvements noted. Four themes emerged that permeated the respondents' comments: the level of understanding and information that respondents have, power and control in the process, extent of delays experienced, and variations in Family Court practice.
