Risk factors for child abuse are discussed, such as low socio-economic status and single parent families. Child abuse intervention strategies are reviewed, including the education of parents and children, and early identification of at-risk families. Community-based preventions, such as Parentline, are also explored. The report describes and evaluates various established parenting skills programmes, including Parenting as First Teachers, Family Service Centres, and Tipu Ora. The authors recommend educating and supporting both parents and children to improve outcomes for families, programmes specifically targeted at high risk families, and parenting strategies for Maori based on Maori values UR - http://www.moh.govt.nz/notebook/nbbooks.nsf/0/be9f42d1e8275c2fcc256ac600093cc9/$FILE/Parenting%201997.pdf ER -
