N2  - The purpose of this study is to examine the prevalence of domestic violence within Chinese immigrant families in Auckland, New Zealand, and to obtain the immigrants' views on the causes of domestic violence. Questionnaires were sent to different Chinese organisations in Auckland. Out of 150 questionnaires sent, 28 were returned which could be interpreted. Results obtained reveal that the causes of domestic violence among Chinese immigrants are similar to those identified in Western culture; power and control are cited as the main causes. The main difference is the origin of the cultural expectation of men over women. Most respondents refused to accept violence in the family and most chose not to disclose it publicly when it had occurred due to family shame and loss of face.     A psycho-educational Stopping Violence Programme using feminist and cognitive behavioural approaches as the basic framework was designed from the data collected from this study.--AUTHOR'S ABSTRACT
