N2  - This paper discusses the main findings of an evaluation of six programmes that provided specialist services for child victims and witnesses of family violence. The main aim of the evaluation was to describe the programmes and assess their efficacy. Information was obtained from parents and children who participated in the programmes, the six programmes themselves, and five key agencies involved with each programme. The paper has a specific focus on three areas, which include meeting children's needs, key features of successful programmes, and best practice. Long term outcomes of the programmes could not be assessed. However, for most of the parents and children, it was found that pre-existing needs were met during the programme and this remained at a three month follow-up. Not all children's needs were met though. It was suggested that these children may benefit more by individual counselling or continuing family support. The authors conclude that a variety of programmes that meet individual needs, and further research on what is likely to be most effective, would assist in breaking the cycle of violence and ameliorating harm
