The research was qualitative and employed a narrative approach. Several interviews were held with whanau who have been involved in Family Court guardianship proceedings. Interviews were also conducted with legal counsel and social service providers. The methodology showed a commitment to Maori values, principals, language and culture. hose conducting the interviews were Maori, and the researchers attempted to ensure that participants came from a diversity of whanau type. The study was conducted in two parts: a pilot study and the main study. The report also includes a literature review of Maori concepts of guardianship, custody and access.
