At 15 Jasvinder, scared and alone ran away from home in England to avoid her impending forced marriage to a much older man she had never met. The act of running away meant she was ostracised by her family for the betrayal of their honour. She spent three years moving constantly to avoid being tracked down. At 18 Jasvinder came out of hiding on the news of her sister's death. Her sister had committed suicide after suffering long term ongoing abuse from her husband. The book follows her daily struggle to live a life free of judgement and abuse, isolated from her family. The book recounts Jasvinder's struggles to return from exile and make a life for herself isolated from her family and subjected to threats of abuse. Jasvinder co founded a shelter for women fleeing their families in similar circumstances - Karma Nirvana and works to  and raise awareness around the subjugation of women and the 5000 honour killings the occur each year world wide
