This report presents findings from the 2006 New Zealand Crime & Safety Survey (NZCASS). Results are reported on in terms of the Ministry of Justice's objective of reducing the impact of crime by improving the resilience of those at risk of victimisation and supporting victims of crime. Valuable baseline information against which to measure future progress is provided. Comprehensive information is provided about the affects of crime on victims, Police responses, how many victims contacted agencies, and what needs they felt remained unmet. There is also a focus on the question of how aware New Zealanders are in general of community services for victims. Family violence features as a major contributor in crime victimisation, with a quarter of the 43,000 families and victims that Victim Support provided services to in 2006/7 relating to family violence. Rape Crisis and Women's Refuge also feature as particularly relevant family violence victim support services.
