The author compares the results with those found by the Ritchies in their studies of 1963 and 1977. Maxwell found that the attitudes and behaviour of New Zealanders about physical punishment in the home appear to be changing. Although smacking with the hand is still both approved and used as a standard parental response to the misbehaviour of children of all ages, anything more severe is no longer a part of the repertoire of most parents or the experience of most children.
