A postal questionnaire and interviews provided data for the investigation. It was found that abuse correlated with an increased risk for a range of mental health problems, but in nearly all cases, its effects could only be understood in relationship to the context from which it emerged. Childhood sexual abuse, according to the authors, should be regarded (in most cases) as one element in a matrix of adverse family, social, and interpersonal experiences that increase an individual's vulnerability to psychiatric disorders ER -
