It is written in response to the Domestic Violence Act (1995) coming into effect which, for the first time, provided homosexuals in New Zealand the opportunity to obtain protection orders against their intimate partners. The dominant paradigm of power and control as it relates to domestic violence is discussed. Comparisons are made between heterosexual relationships and gay male relationships in terms of how domestic violence is perceived and how it is addressed as it relates to the law. The issues of generalised homophobia and institutionalised discrimination are incorporated into the discussion UR - http://www.waikato.ac.nz/law/research/waikato_law_review/volume_4,_issue_1,_1996 ER -
