N2  - This article discusses the rationale for a specialist response to domestic violence. It looks at a number of issues that, without specialist training, professionals (such as counsellors and social workers) may not respond to appropriately or may increase the risks to those experiencing domestic violence. Some of the commonly held beliefs that thwart a safe and appropriate response to domestic violence are explained. The author concludes that New Zealand has a long, long way to go before those people disclosing their experience of domestic violence can be assured of an appropriate response from professionals and helping agencies
