Presented to the Governor-General by the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Historical Abuse in State Care and in the Care of Faith-based Institutions, Released 2 August 2023
This report found cries for help from survivors of Marylands School and Hebron Trust were ignored for decades.
Both facilities were run by the Order of the Brothers of St John of God.
The report found the Catholic Church, the Order and State have never been held accountable for their role or for failing to address the harm.
This report is part of the Royal Commission’s wider investigation into abuse in the Catholic Church institutions. (From the media release).
This is one of the case studies published by the Royal Commission throughout the course of the Inquiry, which investigate abuse and neglect in a number of State and faith-based institutions across Aotearoa New Zealand. There are seven case studies in all. (From the website). This case study and Beautiful children where published prior to the release of Whanaketia, the final report. Five further case studies were published on the release of the final report. Record #8303
