Report 6 of 8
This report presents the findings from a survey of Family Court Judges. It is the sixth report in a series of eight publications resulting from a research programme on custody and access issues in the Family Courts undertaken by the Policy and Research Division of the Department of Justice. A written questionnaire was developed through consultation with various people who were closely involved in the operation of the Family Court, and this was sent to all Family Court Judges. Eighteen questionnaires, containing both closed and open-ended questions, were completed. Topic areas covered in the questionnaire were administration and performance of the Family Courts in relation to custody and access issues, specialist services the court offers, issues concerning children who are the subjects of custody and access disputes, violence between spouses, and the appropriateness of Family Court procedures for Maori and Pacific Island clients. The Judges responses relating to these topic areas are presented and described in detail.
