This book comprises a collection of conference papers on varying aspects of family law. The conference was held in Christchurch on 31 August - 2 September 1998, and was organised by the New Zealand Law Society Continuing Legal Education Committee. Among the papers presented, there is discussion on the 'best interests of the child' principle; counsel for the child, including the role of the lawyer and cultural issues; and the protection of children from parental violence in the context of risk assessments and the role of the Family Court. Keynote speakers include: Mark Henaghan, Jenny Binns, Greg Hikaka, Kevin Garner and Nigel Fairley, Lynda Kearns, and Craig Smith.
