Online resources: Summary: Note: A new Healthy Ageing Strategy was released in 2016 (#5275). The primary aim of this report is to develop an integrated approach to health and disability support services and programmes for older people. It was recognised that an integrated strategy was needed in this area, rather than the piecemeal delivery approach which had been conducted previously. Eight objectives were identified where change was necessary to deliver coordinated and responsive health and disability support programmes. In response to the objective of older people, their families and whanau being able to make well-informed choices about options for healthy living, health care and/or disability support needs, one of the actions identified was that the Ministry and District Health Boards would review and strengthen provisions for protecting vulnerable older people from abuse. To that end, the Ministry of Health will support the development of protocols and promote training for health providers in recognising and responding to family violence and abuse. There will also be a review of the provisions for enduring power of attorney in the Protection of Personal and Property Rights Act (1988), and collaboration with elder abuse and neglect prevention services. The Ministry of Health will establish a framework for monitoring and reviewing progress in implementing the "Health of Older People Strategy". This will include annual monitoring of reports and a three-yearly stock take of progress.
