This report aims to provide researchers and policy makers with relevant and authoritative statistics relating to family structures, dynamics and support patterns in Aotearoa New Zealand in order to assist their understanding of the changes that are taking place in families and the impacts of policies and services on families. A summary is provided of recent trends in family formation and dissolution and the impact that these have had on the nature of the family. The authors outline key areas of information need that have resulted from these changes. An international review of family statistics is undertaken in order to show how other national statistics offices have addressed the information needs that have been identified in New Zealand. An appendix contains a list of countries producing family statistics by survey. Copy archived by National Library of New Zealand.
