This fact sheet is designed to increase public awareness about the links between problem gambling and family violence, particularly intimate partner violence. It also very briefly touches upon related topics, such as: health issues common to partners of pathological gamblers; the relationship between problem gambling, alcohol abuse and intimate partner violence; and an increased risk of violence due to unemployment. The majority of the research cited is US or Canadian-based, with the exception of one Taiwan-based study citing the effects of the traditional Chinese family's patriarchal structure on financial exploitation related to problem gambling.
