Summary: A major argument of this book is that many of the values of the cultural stereotypes of masculinity - toughness, dominance, extreme competitiveness - play a big role in the escalating criminal and domestic violence of the world we live in today. The same values also underlie the thinking of many political leaders. Whilst parents are trying to raise children who are self-reliant and sensitive to others' feelings, toys, television and video games relentlessly focus on macho toughness, often to the extreme. The author draws on research in psychology, sociology and anthropology to demonstrate how violence in our society can be reduced, particularly through caring, non-violent fathers or father figures who deter violent behaviour in boys.
