This chapter provides an historical analysis of child abuse and neglect in New Zealand and government responses to this social issue. The author specifically focuses on child abuse during the period 1950-1970, and examines how child welfare responses during this period have shaped contemporary practices in this field. Case studies are utilised to illustrate the complexity of identifying and investigating situations of child abuse and neglect. The author suggests that the difficulty for professionals in balancing the protection of children with maintaining the family unit is as pertinent today as it was through the 1950-1970 period.
