This article discusses the Child, Youth and Family's Risk Estimation System (RES) and how this works in practice with social workers. It draws on a qualitative research project where social workers recalled straightforward and complex cases of child protection assessment work and their associated practice decisions. The RES offers social workers a risk assessment framework that assists with family and whānau participation, generates assessment questioning, and facilitates discussions about risk and its management during supervision meetings.
