Summary, etc | The prominence of children’s views in government policymaking in Aotearoa New Zealand has shifted significantly in recent years. This shift has been marked by notable milestones in which children’s views have played a central role. However, challenges persist. For the most part, children’s opportunities to share their views still do not reflect the type of participation envisaged by the UNCRC. In addition, insufficient attention has been paid to whether a view of participation which frames children as individuals, in isolation from their families and communities, has the potential to do more harm than good, especially from the perspective of Māori (Aotearoa New Zealand’s Indigenous peoples). This chapter uses a decolonial perspective to build on the lessons learned in Aotearoa New Zealand and re-conceive of children’s participation in a way that respects their place within their family and highlights broader social justice issues while ensuring that their voices are still heard.
