520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC.
Summary, etc The high prevalence of sexual violence at universities indicates that targeted prevention efforts, including social marketing campaigns, are needed. However, past research has overlooked non-White students when investigating the use of social marketing principles in this area. This is concerning as female East and South-East Asian students in Western countries report experiencing a sexualised gaze yet may also under-report being victimised. It is possible that social marketing posters could centre East and South-East Asian perspectives by reflecting their unique needs as an ethnic minority in Aotearoa New Zealand. In this study, I explored East and South-East Asian students’ perceptions of overseas and local social marketing poster campaigns which aim to prevent sexual violence. Twenty-five participants were recruited through snowball sampling and targeted recruitment from one university and one polytechnic in Aotearoa New Zealand. Participants attended one of six semi-structured focus groups. An inductive thematic data analysis approach resulted in four themes. The first theme – the need to address gender role expectations and Asian cultural norms in campaigns intended for Asian students – describes the necessity of designing poster campaigns that are sensitive to patriarchal and collectivist expectations that are common among Asian communities. The second theme – the difficulty of accounting for Asian student diversity in campaigns – highlights the tension between Asian students desiring representation while also harbouring concerns around tokenism, the possibility of harmful stereotyping and the erasure of those who identify as LGBTQIA+. The third theme – the importance of recognising the differences and similarities between Kiwi and Asian cultures – explores features of the local culture which relate to the goal of sexual violence prevention for East and South-East Asian students within New Zealand. The fourth theme – the issue of family reputation when it comes to the stigma of sexual violence – outlines the importance of addressing intergenerational pressures to ‘save face,’ as well as its implications for poster campaigns. These findings extend the current body of literature by placing East and South-East Asian perspectives at the forefront. At the same time, the consistencies between strategies suggested by Asian and non-Asian students that one’s ethnicity is not the sole factor influencing victimisation. While the themes expand on what might work for inclusive poster campaigns, they also raise questions about which design aspects could address the strong cultural taboo of sexual violence within New Zealand Asian communities. Future research is needed to explore the impact of posters or alternative mediums which may allow for the greater dissemination of messaging to the target audience. In sum, acknowledging the subjective experiences and sociocultural challenges of all Asian students in Aotearoa New Zealand is needed to develop poster campaigns which successfully address this demographic. However, it is also important to incorporate this material to ensure that those deemed to be at risk are not systematically excluded from prevention efforts. (Author's abstract). Record #8158
