520 ## - SUMMARY, ETC. |
Summary, etc |
Early in 1991, the Mental Health Foundation began to plan for a national seminar on Prevention of Violence and Victims of Violence. The original theme of the conference was to revisit the Roper Report and to ascertain the degree to which the recommendations contained in the report had been implemented. In January 1992 there was an unprecedented high number of killings in New Zealand, provoking widespread questioning as to the reason for this violence and arousing public concern. Two family slayings later in the year added to the homicide rate and the Government responded setting up a working group to examine the issues. The theme of the conference thus took on even greater significance with the major objectives defined by the Planning Committee as being to: Determine the extent of violence and violent offending in New Zealand; 2. Access the impact of violence and the costs to individuals and society; 3. Identify major correlates and causes of violence; 4. Review progress or otherwise towards implementation of the recommendations of the 1987 Report of the Ministerial Inquiry into Violence (Roper Report); 5. Specify measures that, if pursued with vigour, are likely to reduce levels of violence and violent crime. (From the Foreword). Record #3709 |
